When Temporal Physics and Journalism Collide

Something that may be under-appreciated about new media, at least in the present time, is its capacity to serve as a digital record of a person's lifespan content.
In 1984, I was a student at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) and working as sports editor of The Daily Helmsman, the four-day-per-week campus newspaper.  At the time, Memphis State's men's basketball team was a top 25 powerhouse, reaching the NCAA Final Four in 1985 before losing to eventual national champion Villanova.
That meant I got to cover a lot of home games that were also being nationally televised.  It was a rather exciting scene for a 19-year-old journalist, but I was more focused on my work for the campus newspaper during each game and didn't think much about games once they were completed, unless it was to review statistics or consider an angle for an upcoming article.  As time passed and I moved on to other places and people to write about, I gave little, if any, thought about my basketball beat at Memphis State.
But that was before this occurred last weekend:

While on YouTube after looking at a college basketball-related link, I unexpectedly discovered that someone had uploaded several full game broadcasts of Memphis State basketball from 1984 and 1985.  Although you can't make out the faces in the background (this was well before HD broadcasting), I am one of the people sitting at the media table between both team benches in these videos.  As I began watching the game and the TV camera panned across the court, I became acutely aware of what I was experiencing -- here I was in Austin, Texas, in 2013, watching a college basketball game that I was also watching in Memphis, Tennessee, nearly 30 years earlier.  Not only that, but my present self was watching my past self watch the game, and my past self was sitting there on press row with no idea that his future self would one day be watching the same game through technology that didn't exist yet and a concept called "new media."
Granted, it's not exactly the same game; one is a live event, the other is an electronic recording of the event.  However, it does provide a strange type of parallax effect, psychologically and sensorially.  The content is the same and so is much of the stimuli - things like the sounds of the pep band playing, the sight of players running back and forth on the court, and the feelings of drama and excitement as the game continues.  All of this triggers memory, which produces its own stimuli and it isn't long before I start to re-experience other details of that point in time and space, like chowing down on hot dogs and chips in the media hospitality room before the game, or patiently awaiting a sports information department assistant to bring paper copies of the game stats at halftime.
Until this particular Saturday evening, two journalists, actually the same person, were blissfully unaware of such a peculiar connection across the time-space continuum.
One of us still doesn't know.

Preliminary Rearch Proposal



New Media and Sensorial Time Travel – New media as a whole has created a myriad of options for keeping abreast of current issues and news stories, but what of its arguably inadvertent development as an archival depository for sights, sounds, and events of the past?  My research proposal would examine the question of whether we are as likely, or possibly more likely, to use new media as a conduit for indulging our inner time traveler as for creating awareness of the present.  The hypothesis backing such research is that we, as humans, have an innate, sometimes nostalgia-fed desire to experience sensorial stimuli from our youth, or possibly from a point in time prior to individual existence and consciousness of such stimuli because of its unfamiliarity.  New media has become a provider for this type of “time traveling,” utilizing older, traditional media to provide a connecting point in a fashion similar to a wormhole in theoretical physics.  The research would evaluate the likelihood of a new media user to go back in time versus dwelling in the present time with regard to online content.

Academic Journals and Articles



American Journalism Review (ISSN: 1067-8654) was, most recently, published three times per year (spring, fall, and winter) by the University of Maryland’s Department of Journalism. However, it will become an online-exclusive product beginning with the Fall 2013 edition. According to the EBSCO site, it includes feature articles, commentary, profiles, books, legislation and timely news of note for editors, columnists, reporters and correspondents on newspapers, television, magazines, radio, business and government.

Article: Spivak, Cary. (2013). Solving The Hyperlocal Puzzle. American Journalism Review, 35(1), 12-17.

Abstract from author: The article examines whether businessman Joe Ricketts' DNAinfo.com two hyperlocal news websites focusing on New York City and Chicago, Illinois will be successful. It states that Ricketts' launched the web sites through his New Media News LLC with dozens of journalists who cover the said areas. It discusses the business performance of the web sites which are reportedly showing impressive growth with the New York site having 1.44 million unique visitors and the Chicago site attracting 613,171 as of March 2013. It profiles Ricketts who is one of the top 400 richest people in the U.S. It also tackles the predicament of hyperlocal sites which are struggling with profitability.


Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly (ISSN: 1077-6990, known as Journalism Quarterly from 1955-1994) presents articles and essays on all aspects of print journalism and electronic mass communications, including reviews, studies, and opinion, as described on the EBSCO site. It is published by Sage Publications.

Abstract from author: Under the republication doctrine, repeating false and defamatory statements has traditionally triggered liability for the repeater. However, some confusion has emerged regarding retweeting posts of others on Twitter, the popular microblog site. Does retweeting the defamatory statement of another open the retweeter to liability? This article examines exceptions to the republication doctrine, such as the single publication rule, the wire service defense, and the Communications Decency Act (CDA) to answer this question. A review of court opinions leads to the conclusion that Section 230 of the CDA provides a powerful shield for users of interactive computer services such as Twitter.

New York Times article "Overcoming 'Physics Envy'"

To me, the most important point underscored by this article is we, in the social sciences, are dealing with aspects of human behavior, which are difficult, if not impossible, to place within empirical values and formulas.  Yet, as the article also points out, many valuable theoretical models and the ideas behind those would be lost to us today if a strict rule of empirical testing were employed across all disciplines of research and theory.

While the world of chemistry, physics, biology and other "natural sciences" follow observable laws that can be constructed as data and causal relationships, human behavior cannot; the aspects of our being that are studied in social sciences cannot be easily structured like computer programming routines.  That does not make the theoretical models or the conclusions we may draw from them any less valid or useful to present and future generations.
